The diner's Harold Robbins
Diner regular · Crystal Lake diner
Still © Peacock. Shown for commentary.
Nine months after Jason drowns, the diner regulars are passing around a Harold Robbins and laughing at the good parts. Pam is out at the lake insisting her son's body is still in the water. The town picked its reading, and it wasn't the obituaries.

The book
The Betsy
Robbins published it in November 1971, which makes it the hot new hardcover on the counter in the show's spring of 1972. A Detroit car baron builds one last car, names it after his great-granddaughter, and the family goes to war over the company. Laurence Olivier played the baron in the 1978 movie. Of all the books on that counter, the show chose one about a parent who won't let the family story end.
